When The Who’s TOMMY was released in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a rock & roll landmark. A musical-length “rock opera” with story line and themes that resonated with a vast audience: infidelity, child abuse, idol worship, and yes…pinball. Those themes in the context of a rock album with elements of classical composition produced rock radio classics that are now instantly recognizable. TOMMY was also released during a time when the world, like it’s lead character, was undergoing seismic transformation.
In a present day that feels nearly as transformational, the time feels right to again bring TOMMY to the stage. Smash The Mirror: A Portland TOMMY Experience aims to create an authentic performance, incorporating visual and theatrical elements inspired by the 1975 film version. A rock ensemble complimented by horn section and other instruments will accompany local “star” guest singers to portray different characters in the story.
