An Evening with Lunasa
Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade. Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and later he, with guitarist Donogh Hennessy, would form the dynamic rhythm section of The Sharon Shannon Band; Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) has recently replaced Hennessy; Fiddler Sean Smyth is an All-Ireland champion who has played with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; Kevin Crawford, considered to be among the finest flutists in Ireland played with the acclaimed traditional group Moving Cloud; and, piper Cillian Vallely of the famous Vallely artistic clan has performed with Riverdance and recently recorded with Bruce Springsteen. One of the most enduring songwriters of the last 40 years celebrates the release of his new album Lifetime Achievement,” at the Alberta Rose. Loudon Wainwright III is one of our favorites. Don’t miss this show! “I had a very romantic idea when I began that I would be dead by the time I was 25,” he admits with a smile. “Just because that sounded so cool and groovy and dangerous. I’m happy it didn’t work out that way. When I think about the fact that I’ve been doing this for half a century, it’s kind of incredible. The place I played at last night, I played fifty years ago. It’s encouraging in a funny kind of way – that it’s gone on this long and it’s still a lot of fun. The performing part of it, and the mysterious thing of getting to write a new song. After the doldrums of the past two years, I had a creative burst in the last year, and that felt good. It was something to build a record on.”With a full tour itinerary for 2022 already in place, Loudon is looking forward to taking the new songs onto the stage. Looking back on a legacy the New York Times calls “rich, complicated and often surprisingly dark,” he says, “I remember when I made my first record for Atlantic in 1969. I was always saying, ‘I want to make a voice and guitar record, and I want it to be a record – not only a recording, but a document that captures a moment.’ I was 21 and very serious, and I thought I’d be dead in four years (laughs). So I wanted to make something that would last. A testament. Now, fifty years later, I guess I still want to make a testament. I want to write a group of songs and get them down in the best possible way. And I like to think they might last a while.”Portland-based Americana treasure Tony Furtado opens the show. Christian McBride is a six-time GRAMMY Award winning bassist/composer and the host of NPR’s Jazz Night in America. Since the early 1990’s Christian McBride has recorded on over 300 dates as a sideman. However, he’s been a leader from his debut recording in 1995. Aside from various stints with Sting, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard and George Duke, McBride has been artist-in-residence and artistic director with organizations such as Jazz House Kids, Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Jazz Museum in Harlem, Jazz Asoen and NJPAC.McBride was recently named the artistic director of the historic Newport Jazz Festival, taking over the reins from the festival’s longtime artistic director and founder, George Wein. Join Myrrh Larsen for a special early-access peek at their upcoming multidisciplinary narrative rock show At The End of Everything. Showcasing six breathtaking circus and dance pieces performed to a live musical set, we follow the storylines of three classic fairy tales from the perspective of the characters within them, brought to life through all new original songs featuring Myrrh Larsen and their band. Including narration by Madame D’Aulnoy (Megan Skye Hale – Speculative Drama, Vespertine Ball) guides us through this one-hour set combining spectacle, song, and storytelling to grapple with themes of transformation, loss, and the meaning of “endings”. Afterward, accompany Madame D’Aulnoy to her private parlour for an evening salon of fairy tales, fantasies, and a feast of flesh! Taking the stage for a series of readings and burlesque performances following Lacy Knightly’s award winning Booklover’s Burlesque format, this sparkling afterparty of storybook magic highlights the work and life of Madame D’Aulnoy – a predecessor to Perrault whose literary and folk tale salons paved the way for generations of folklorists and fairy tale authors to come.
