Seffarine
“Seffarine’s music can melt the coldest hearts”-Chicago Reader At a momentous first meeting at a coffee shop in Fez, Moroccan vocalist Lamiae Naki and multi-instrumentalist Nat Hulskamp composed their first song and decided to get married. Brought together by their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar — Spanish flamenco and Moroccan Arabic music — they created Seffarine. Seffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Fez, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers, and where Lamiae’s family is well known as masters of the tradition. Seffarine’s music embraces and extends Morocco’s musical collision between Arabic, Iberian and West African cultures, forging vibrant original music deeply rooted in their backgrounds in flamenco guitar, oud and Arab Andalusian music. Nat and Lamiae built an international quintet bringing in all star musicians from Iran, the US and Spain, who infuse the sound with textured instrumentation and inspired improvisation. Sweeping kamancheh (Persian spike-fiddle) ornamentation plays off gritty bass grooves and explosive flamenco footwork, with Lamiae’s fluidly riveting voice at the center, sending up sheets of cascading Andalusi melodies punctuated by the catchy hooks of North African Chaabi, sung in her native Moroccan Arabic. Their sound has taken them around the world, from touring Australia and Europe to receiving grants to study Ottoman singing in Turkey, to the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo, to recording with top flamenco musicians in Spain such as Diego del Morao and Latin Grammy winner Antonio Rey. Lene Lovich with special guest STAHV
Lene Lovich takes a night off from her national tour opening for The B52’s and DEVO to play a show at the Alberta Rose. Don’t miss this underground legend! Detroit-born legendary post-punk pop singer Lene Lovich hit the top of the UK charts with her single “Lucky Number” in 1979, and was crowned the “Queen of Quirk”, influencing a generation of pop and alternative acts, from Nina Hagen to Boy George, and from Madonna to Dresden Dolls. A normally reclusive figure, Lovich turned her back on the limelight after her third album No Man’s Land was released in 1982 amid disagreements with her record company about her unwillingness to compromise her groundbreaking visual style for the then newly emergent MTV. Subsequently she has recorded only two albums in the last thirty years. Lovich’s unique vocal and visual style, along with her catchy but experimental songwriting, has exerted a huge influence over alternative pop culture and garnered her many plaudits and continued interest. She has been described as everything from “Kate Bush on acid” to “the New Wave Maria Callas”. Her hits “Lucky Number”, “Say When”, “Bird Song” and “New Toy” are still regular features in the clubs and radio of Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA. Seattle solo artist STAVH opens the show. Cheryl Wheeler with Kenny White
It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers, with fans of the New England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and comic.Kenny White opens the show with a set of his clever and musical original songs and accompanies Cheryl on her set. Kenny comes to the world of the touring singer-songwriter following a long and successful musical journey as a studio musician and producer. He regularly opens for Cheryl Wheeler and has toured as the opener for Stephen Stills & Judy Collins and many other well-known artists. Born in New York City, Kenny began his career in the 1970s, touring exclusively as the keyboard player for Jonathan Edwards and later with Livingston Taylor, on Linda Ronstadt’s legendary, “Living in the USA” tour. White contributed to film soundtracks as writer/musician including four films by Indie-director laureate, John Sayles. Kenny also appears on dozens of recordings of other musicians, including Marc Cohn’s platinum debut.. Tickets: $32 Advance$38 At the Door Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
