Quadraphonnes Presents: MOONDOG – Sax Pax for a Sax – Live
Influenced by classical, jazz, and indigenous American music, Moondog’s is one of the most improbable lives of the twentieth century: a blind and homeless street musician became a legendary eccentric in New York City and rose to prominence as a major-label recording artist and internationally respected composer. He became an honorary member of the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in the late 1940s. The Prestige jazz label released his unique, melodic compositions, and in the late 1960s, Viking-garbed Moondog became a pop music sensation on Columbia Records. Portland’s all-women saxophone quartet, The Quadraphonnes’ production of his Sax Pax for A Sax, is an ode to one of his most beloved instruments, showcases the range of the horn with a total of 11 saxophonists on stage. Moondog calls his saxophone project Sax Pax, underlining that in this case the saxophones are not to be linked with military bands for which the instruments originally had been intended, but are used exclusively for peaceful purposes. All the pieces are part of a series which Moondog calls ZAJAZ, “jazz” in two directions, like a Janus-head with two faces. There is one looking backwards into the past, represented by classical techniques of composing and the other face turned towards the future which is characterized by a new kind of combining old and new elements of music. The Quadraphonnes have been a veritable force within the Pacific Northwest for almost 20 years. In addition to being featured performers at beloved local Jazz festivals, clubs, concert halls, and radio stations, the “Quads” have toured SoCal, released several albums, and produced the multi-media event, Tone-Color Melody. A recent collaboration with Portland’s local film score composer, Mark Orton, resulted in their debut performance on the soundtrack of Miramax’s production of The Holdovers. In addition to performances small and large, the Quads are also deeply rooted in music education and love to teach clinics and workshops. Mieke Bruggeman, Chelsea Luker, Michelle Medler and Mary-Sue Tobin compose, arrange, collaborate, educate, and scheme to make as many people as possible fall in love with everything saxophone. Kat Edmonson with special guest Dominic Castillo
Kat Edmonson performs new songs from her forthcoming release as well as highlights from previous albums. She’ll interweave humorous stories about herself and her music with disarming candor and vulnerability. The gamine singer is “intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase” (The New York Times). “She’s a savvy student of ’60s film soundtracks, jazz-pop stylists and Brill Building songcraft, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome.” – NPR Kat Edmonson is a Songwriters Hall of Fame award-winning songwriter and singer. She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Tonight Show and has released six studio albums to date. Raised on the music and film of the early-to- mid-twentieth century, Kat performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show interweaving humorous anecdotes and philosophical musings with disarming candor and vulnerability. “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” (NPR) Portland singer and songwriter Dominic Castillo opens the show with his fabulous band. Biamp Portland Jazz Festival presented by PDX Jazz: JD Simo with special guest Lloyd Jones & Mark Shark Duo
JD Simo’s talent has no boundaries. His love of music is just that – a love of ALL music – and he has mastered every genre he’s explored. His remarkable talent and versatility has led to recording sessions with artists including Beyoncé, Dolly Parton, Tommy Emmanuel, Jack White, Joe Bonamassa, The War and Treaty, Chris Isaak and Stevie Nicks. He’s also been blessed to share the stage with folks like the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and collaborate with BlackBerry Smoke, Luther Dickinson and Anson Funderburgh. As a further testament to the depth of his talent, the world of film came calling when JD was chosen to flesh out and perform every single guitar note on the soundtrack to Baz Lurhman’s film “Elvis”. Like many artists and creators during the COVID shutdown, JD found a liberating outlet through social media, releasing a relentless treasure of exploratory jams from “The House of Grease”. With each installment he reached a growing audience of roots music fans as well as guitar gearheads wanting the latest on that JD Simo rig rundown. While this tour will feature songs from his recently released album, Songs From the House of Grease, fans will also be rewarded as Simo digs deep into the inspiration he has found in everything from Afrobeat to Maxwell Street era Chicago Blues, from soulful funk jams to psyched out jazz-rock. Come early, stay late…the show will show will be presented in two sets. Lloyd JonesPortland, Oregon roots artist Lloyd Jones has recorded six critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and racked up dozens of major awards and accolades. He’s a relentless road dog, hitting festival stages, Delbert’s annual Sandy Beaches Cruises (he’s been a regular on six winter cruises), and clubs all across the land to enthusiastic crowds who can’t get enough of his swampy blues, his backporch picking, his serious-as-anthrax funk, soul, roadhouse two-beats, and old-school rhythm and blues (back before the R&B tag was somehow appropriated for other musical purposes, apparently when we weren’t looking). Yet he may be the most invisible, best-kept roots/blues/Americana secret on the contemporary scene. Mark SharkMark Shark, a renowned guitarist and open tuning expert, has literally written the book on the subject. His incredible skill and deep understanding of the instrument will transport you to new musical dimensions. Biamp Portland Jazz Festival presented by PDX Jazz – Vijay Iyer Trio ft. Linda May Han Oh, Tyshawn Sorey
There will be a pre-show Jazz Conversation with the artists which begins at 7:00 PM. Composer-pianist Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, shape-shifting presence in 21st-century music. His deeply interactive, powerfully expressive musical language is indebted to the composer-pianist lineage from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen, the creative music movement of the 60s and 70s, and rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa. As MinnPost recently observed, “twining composition and improvisation is rightfully his most celebrated métier.” He has released twenty-six widely praised albums; received three Grammy nominations, numerous national and international prizes, and a MacArthur Fellowship; composed for orchestras, soloists, and chamber ensembles; and collaborated with poets, filmmakers, choreographers, and music-makers from across the planet. But Iyer’s artistry finds perhaps its purest expression in his most celebrated group, the Vijay Iyer Trio, praised by NPR as “truly astonishing” and by The New York Times as “one of the best bands in jazz.” Telemakus opens the show General Admission: $52 Advance $47 Advance for PDX Jazz Members $57 Day of Show Preferred Reserved Seating: (Reserved seating in the first 6 rows of the center section) Preferred Seating is SOLD OUT $62 Advance $57 Advance for PDX Jazz Members $67 Day of Show Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian Review our venue FAQ here

He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer among others.
