Not Fade Away – Buddy Holly & Ritchie Valens Tribute presented by Joshua Josue

Joshua Josué presents a night of songs by Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper to commemorate 66 years since the day the music died. On January 31, 2025, music enthusiasts will have the privilege of experiencing Joshua’s heartfelt tribute firsthand. Taking center stage, Joshua and his band will skillfully render the timeless classics of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. From the foot-tapping rhythms of “La Bamba” to the infectious energy of “That’ll be The Day” and the soulful ballad, “Donna,” Joshua’s performance promises to be a captivating journey through the golden era of rock and roll. But the magic doesn’t stop there. In addition to the chart-toppers, Joshua will delve into the lesser-known treasures of Ritchie Valens’ repertoire, treating the audience to gems like “Ritchie’s Blues” and the enchanting “Malagueña.” These selections shine a light on the depth and versatility of the Chicano musical tradition. This is more than just a performance; it’s a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll history and the Chicano heritage, and a fusion of cultural richness and artistic expression. Through Joshua’s soulful renditions, he not only pays homage to the musical greats but also leaves an indelible mark on the tapestry of Chicano musical history. With local blues guitar hero Ben Rice, bassist Keith McCarthy, and drummer Vince Adamé, Joshua brings to life the music that inspired him and a generation of guitar bands. 3 LEG TORSO PRESENTS The Elves of Frostländ in Going Home!

3 LEG TORSO PRESENTS The Elves of Frostländ in Going Home! with Special Guests: Pepe Raphael Mark Orton Bernardo Gomez Norman Sylvester Shoehorn Leapin’ Louie Lichtenstein and The Next Generation   During the historic pandemic of 2020, the members of 3 Leg Torso were recruited by a large, mysterious man to travel to Frostländ and become elves in his toy workshop, which actually turned out to be a small cabin in the woods with no heat, frozen water pipes, and a tiny room full of tools which quickly became obsolete for making toys…because they were frozen solid to the benches!   Steadily, the newly appointed elves survived the chilling darkness and crippling mental depression by playing  their various musical instruments they were allowed to bring on their journey, and with this, they discovered that their music somehow magically heated their icy cabin.   Towards the end of the toy-building season, the Elves happily wrapped up their duties at the workshop, ready to depart for home, but just as they were leaving, a freak ice storm stranded them for another season. As they experience yet another wave of dread and hopelessness during this period of frozen isolation, random visitors arrive at the cabin, bringing supplies and spreading  joy – and much of this joy is spread through the sharing of music. Kat Edmonson with special guest Dominic Castillo

Kat Edmonson performs new songs from her forthcoming release as well as highlights from previous albums. She’ll interweave humorous stories about herself and her music with disarming candor and vulnerability. The gamine singer is “intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase” (The New York Times). “She’s a savvy student of ’60s film soundtracks, jazz-pop stylists and Brill Building songcraft, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome.” – NPR   Kat Edmonson is a Songwriters Hall of Fame award-winning songwriter and singer. She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Tonight Show and has released six studio albums to date. Raised on the music and film of the early-to- mid-twentieth century, Kat performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show interweaving humorous anecdotes and philosophical musings with disarming candor and vulnerability. “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” (NPR)   Portland singer and songwriter Dominic Castillo opens the show with his fabulous band. Biamp Portland Jazz Festival presented by PDX Jazz – Vijay Iyer Trio ft. Linda May Han Oh, Tyshawn Sorey

There will be a pre-show Jazz Conversation with the artists which begins at 7:00 PM.     Composer-pianist Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, shape-shifting presence in 21st-century music.    His deeply interactive, powerfully expressive musical language is indebted to the composer-pianist lineage from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen, the creative music movement of the 60s and 70s, and rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa. As MinnPost recently observed, “twining composition and improvisation is rightfully his most celebrated métier.”    He has released twenty-six widely praised albums; received three Grammy nominations, numerous national and international prizes, and a MacArthur Fellowship; composed for orchestras, soloists, and chamber ensembles; and collaborated with poets, filmmakers, choreographers, and music-makers from across the planet.    But Iyer’s artistry finds perhaps its purest expression in his most celebrated group, the Vijay Iyer Trio, praised by NPR as “truly astonishing” and by The New York Times as “one of the best bands in jazz.”    Telemakus opens the show   General Admission: $52 Advance $47 Advance for PDX Jazz Members $57 Day of Show   Preferred Reserved Seating: (Reserved seating in the first 6 rows of the center section) Preferred Seating is SOLD OUT $62 Advance $57 Advance for PDX Jazz Members $67 Day of Show   Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian   Review our venue FAQ here

Biamp Portland Jazz Festival presented by PDX Jazz: JD Simo with special guest Lloyd Jones & Mark Shark Duo

JD Simo’s talent has no boundaries. His love of music is just that – a love of ALL music – and he has mastered every genre he’s explored. His remarkable talent and versatility has led to recording sessions with artists including Beyoncé, Dolly Parton, Tommy Emmanuel, Jack White, Joe Bonamassa, The War and Treaty, Chris Isaak and Stevie Nicks. He’s also been blessed to share the stage with folks like the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and collaborate with BlackBerry Smoke, Luther Dickinson and Anson Funderburgh.    As a further testament to the depth of his talent, the world of film came calling when JD was chosen to flesh out and perform every single guitar note on the soundtrack to Baz Lurhman’s film “Elvis”. Like many artists and creators during the COVID shutdown, JD found a liberating outlet through social media, releasing a relentless treasure of exploratory jams from “The House of Grease”. With each installment he reached a growing audience of roots music fans as well as guitar gearheads wanting the latest on that JD Simo rig rundown. While this tour will feature songs from his recently released album, Songs From the House of Grease, fans will also be rewarded as Simo digs deep into the inspiration he has found in everything from Afrobeat to Maxwell Street era Chicago Blues, from soulful funk jams to psyched out jazz-rock. Come early, stay late…the show will show will be presented in two sets.   Lloyd JonesPortland, Oregon roots artist Lloyd Jones has recorded six critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and racked up dozens of major awards and accolades. He’s a relentless road dog, hitting festival stages, Delbert’s annual Sandy Beaches Cruises (he’s been a regular on six winter cruises), and clubs all across the land to enthusiastic crowds who can’t get enough of his swampy blues, his backporch picking, his serious-as-anthrax funk, soul, roadhouse two-beats, and old-school rhythm and blues (back before the R&B tag was somehow appropriated for other musical purposes, apparently when we weren’t looking). Yet he may be the most invisible, best-kept roots/blues/Americana secret on the contemporary scene.   Mark SharkMark Shark, a renowned guitarist and open tuning expert, has literally written the book on the subject. His incredible skill and deep understanding of the instrument will transport you to new musical dimensions.   General Admission: $39.75 Advance $34.75 Advance for PDX Jazz Members$45 Day of Show    Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
