Smash The Mirror: A Portland TOMMY Experience

When The Who’s TOMMY was released in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a rock & roll landmark. A musical-length “rock opera” with story line and themes that resonated with a vast audience: infidelity, child abuse, idol worship, and yes…pinball. Those themes in the context of a rock album with elements of classical composition produced rock radio classics that are now instantly recognizable. TOMMY was also released during a time when the world, like it’s lead character, was undergoing seismic transformation. In a present day that feels nearly as transformational, the time feels right to again bring TOMMY to the stage. Smash The Mirror: A Portland TOMMY Experience aims to create an authentic performance, incorporating visual and theatrical elements inspired by the 1975 film version. A rock ensemble complimented by horn section and other instruments will accompany local “star” guest singers to portray different characters in the story.  Smash The Mirror features: Ben Landsverk (Wonderly, Low Bar Chorale) – Music Director Rich Ray (Ramble On – Led Zep tribute, Jukebox Heroes – Foreigner tribute) – lead vocalist and co-producer Cory West (LiquidLight, Who’s Next – The Who tribute) – lead/electric guitar/vocals Don Henson (Sneakin’ Out, Groovy Wallpaper, WELL) – keyboards/effects/percussion/vocals Anthony Medici (LiquidLight, Superunknown – Soundgarden tribute) – bassist/vocals Connor Reilly (Mercury Tree, LiquidLight, Rainbow Face) –  drums Dennis Milstead (LiquidLight) – acoustic guitar/vocals Ruby Friedman (Ruby Friedman Orchestra, Low Bar Chorale) – guest vocalist Rebecca Olason – French horn This concert event is proudly supported by 92.3 KGON$35 Advance$45 At the Door$55 Preferred Seating (includes seating in the first 7 rows of the center section)Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian Review our Health & Safety Policies HERE

Jerry Joseph Acoustic • Dimpker Brothers

From “The Beautiful Madness of Jerry Joseph: An Essay by Patterson Hood” Jerry Joseph is a musician who lives in Portland Oregon, but he’s often gone. He’s been inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame but is still rather obscure to a lot of people. He plays well over 150 shows a year in the usual places. Across America. Sometimes in Europe, Mexico, and Central America. Then there’s these other places he plays—Lebanon, Israel, Kurdish Iraq, India, and Afghanistan. All over the Middle East, often in war zones and refugee camps. In addition to his touring, Jerry has set up a non-profit called Nomad Music Foundation that acts as a sort of School of Rock for displaced teenagers in areas of conflict. So far, he has taken guitars and taught lessons in camps in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Sulaymaniyah and Dahuk, both in Kurdish Iraq. These life-changing missions have been written up in Rolling Stone, Relix, and PBS News Hour. Oh yeah, and he’s really fucking great.  A triple threat—someone who works at the highest levels as a songwriter, singer, and player. Jason Isbell, who kinda personifies such, recently tweeted about triple threats and listed Jerry Joseph (along with Richard Thompson and St. Vincent) among the greatest examples of that phenomenon. Most likely, if you know who Jerry is, you agree, but there’s also a big chance that you don’t. His talent, drive, work ethic, amazing body of work, and flat out badass-ness make him one of the most underrated and tragically overlooked artists alive today. He deserves better, and I’m hoping to help shine a light on who and what Jerry Joseph is and why you should listen to what he’s doing and saying.Read more at https://www.jerryjoseph.com/bio And then come to the show.Martin and Adam Dimpker are Sweden’s Dimpker Brothers. The brothers have played music together for most of their lives and the result is something many refer to as “blood harmonies”. In addition to their harmonic connectedness, the brothers are exceptional multi instrumental musicians sought after as sidemen. Kat Edmonson • Dominic Castillo

Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer “with an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret and vintage cosmopolitanism pop” (The New York Times).  She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Late Show. The New York Times describes her music as “fresh as a spring bouquet” while NPR says, “Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen.” Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century, Kat is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. She performs original songs and familiar classics in her live show, interweaving humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings, and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. Her longtime band members’ keen and sensitive accompaniment allows Kat to freely veer off-script as she’s often inclined to do In the winter of 2022, Kat made her theatrical debut in “The Hang”: a new jazz opera by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. Upon its opening, the off-off Broadway show received “Critic’s Pick” in The New York Times highlighting Kat’s “extraordinary artistry.” About her performance, Vulture praises the burgeoning actress for her “weightless, soaring scat arias,” The Wrap says, “Kat Edmonson emerges as the Teresa Stratus of off-off Broadway.” “The Hang” imagines the final hours of the life of Socrates as he asks his friends to use every moment left to think on virtue.Portland singer/songwriter Dominic Castillo opens with a solo set.
