Jazz Is Dead

Jazz Is Dead has been playing instrumental jazz-tinged versions of Grateful Dead songs since 1998, making 2023 its 25th anniversary year. Since its inception, the band has been a rotating cast of characters, but there from the beginning has been bassist Alphonso Johnson, best known for his work with the jazz fusion outfit Weather Report. Alphonso is no stranger to the Grateful Dead world, having been an original member of Bob Weir’s Bobby and the Midnites in the early 1980s and the 2000 incarnation of the post-Garcia Dead spin-off The Other Ones, where he crossed paths with guitar wizard Steve Kimock. Kimock is himself an integral member of the Grateful Dead extended family, having played in Keith and Donna Godchaux’s Heart of Gold Band, Kingfish, and later Ratdog featuring Bob Weir and the late ’90s version of Phil Lesh & Friends. He shared the stage with Jerry Garcia in 1988 when Jerry sat-in with Zero, another psychedelic San Francisco band with lyrics penned by Robert Hunter and whose membership included Martin Fierro, who played with Jerry in Legion of Mary and was a guest saxophonist on the Grateful Dead album Wake of the Flood. Subsequently, Kimock tapped Johnson to be the bass player in the early 2000s for his fondly remembered, mind-melting project, Steve Kimock Band. Notably, 2023 happens to be the 50th anniversary of the classic 1973 Grateful Dead album Wake of the Flood, so to celebrate the dual anniversaries of Jazz Is Dead and that album, Johnson put together an extensive coast-to-coast Jazz Is Dead tour. Reunited once more for the current incarnation are Alphonso and Steve Kimock with the addition of drummer Pete Lavezzoli, probably best known for his longtime stint in Melvin Seals & JGB, and Bobby Lee Rodgers, formerly of The Codetalkers on guitar and banjo. Rodney Crowell: The Chicago Sessions Tour with special guests Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley

Rodney Crowell is the songwriter’s songwriter and an icon among giants. Native Texan, Crowell is a multi-Grammy Award-winning troubadour with fifteen number one hits. Over the course of his career, Crowell has gracefully blended his own mainstream success as an artist with a prolific catalog of songs cut by the likes of Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Keith Urban and more, making him a master among his peers.  With more than 40 years of American roots music under his belt, Crowell has also been cited as the architect of Americana music, extending his genre reach, but owing to the distinctly universal, literary quality of his writing, he has also penned beloved songs for artists as diverse as Bob Seger, Etta James, the Grateful Dead, John Denver, Jimmy Buffett and countless others. A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Crowell is also the author of the acclaimed memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks, and teamed up with New York Times best-selling author Mary Karr for Kin: Songs by Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell in 2012, with Karr saying of her collaborator, “Like Hank Williams or Townes Van Zandt or Miss Lucinda, he writes and croons with a poet’s economy and a well digger’s deep heart.” Crowell was honored with ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award in 2017, and that same year released the album Close Ties, which spawned another Grammy nomination for “It Ain’t Over Yet” with Rosanne Cash and John Paul White in the category of Best Americana Song. 2019’s Texas was a collection of Lone Star-centric collaborations with Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Ronnie Dunn, Steve Earle and more, and Crowell’s most recent album release is the 2021 set, Triage. Crowell came up in Nashville’s songwriting heyday alongside Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and Steve Earle and has continued that legacy of camaraderie and kinship with his peers well into the iconic era of his career. As many say – “your favorite song was probably written by Rodney Crowell.” Tickets$47.50 General Admission$55 At the Door$67.50 Preferred Seating (seating in the first 7 rows of the center section) Minors ok with Parent or Guardian VIEW OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES HERE

Howie Day – AUSTRALIA 20th Anniversary Show

Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt  shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and  his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering, high registers,  but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it. After sales of over a million  records and two Top 10 hits, Day is back on the road in support of his new studio album,  Lanterns.A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By  15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after  graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S.  He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut  Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. The Boston Globe called Day “gorgeously  seasoned, far beyond his years” with “a brave, beautiful singing voice.” During his  relentless touring schedule, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies  and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30,000  copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft.  Tickets: $30 Advance$35 At the Door Minors ok when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
