The Stinkfoot Orchestra – Frank Zappa Tribute featuring Napoleon Murphy Brock
The Stinkfoot Orchestra, featuring the legendary Napoleon Murphy Brock, return to the Alberta Rose! This critically acclaimed act has been leaving it’s mark up and down the west coast since the summer of 2022 – delighting existing fans of Frank Zappa’s music and turning on an entirely new generation to the musical complexity, biting social commentary and humorous musings of one of the 20th century’s most prolific composers. Supported by an onslaught of 6 horns, tuned percussion and 4 vocalists, Brock brings his unparalleled energy and charisma to the stage with every show. Together, the ensemble delivers a performance that spans more than 3 decades of Zappa’s music, pulling material from early Mothers of Invention through the late 1980’s, and presents the music with power, authenticity and musical prowess – all served with a healthy dose of humorous stage antics. There is no greater testament to the respect that SFO have garnered than the number of Zappa alumni who have shown the band their support and encouragement. Arthur Barrow, Ray White, Bruce Fowler, Ike Willis and Lisa Popeil are just a few of those who have shared the stage with the band since their inception – all of whom come away with the same reaction. In a recent radio interview with Zappa’s prolific trombonist of 3 decades, Bruce Fowler, the horn player simplified his thoughts on the band to 3 words “They get it…” Minors ok with parent/guardian Review our venue FAQ here ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Jesus Jones with guests Discoveries of the American Scientific
Jesus Jones are back – but to be strictly accurate, they never actually went away. “We just dropped off the radar, for a while” says singer and principal songwriter Mike Edwards. “We never split, or gave up altogether; we just needed to rediscover how to be a fully-functioning band again”. So – what changed? Well, around a decade ago, the band were merely existing, playing the occasional show when the urge took them. “But then” says Edwards, “we just realised: look, this is still fun, so why don’t we do more, and we’ll have more fun?” Jesus Jones first came together back in 1988, and their distinctive brand of sample-heavy pop found an instant, and receptive audience. Throughout the early 90’s the band enjoyed phenomenal success, particularly in America, where their single “Right Here Right Now” rose to number one, and their second album “Doubt’ sold over a million copies. They played the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury, supported INXS at Wembley Stadium, and performed to a quarter of a million people in Brazil. Ruthie Foster with special guest Stephanie Anne Johnson
Ruthie brings her full band along this time to rock the Rose!Ruthie Foster is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear,” her vocal talent was elevated in worship services at her community church. Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Foster developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career – marching to the beat of her own drum.As the milestone tenth studio album from blues luminary Ruthie Foster, Mileage finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on a life full of professional triumphs, personal loss, and a musical journey that took a self-described “little Black girl with a guitar” from singing at churches in rural Texas to chalking up multiple Grammy nominations and collaborating with fellow greats such as Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.
