Biamp Portland Jazz Festival: Particle Kid / Daniel Lanois
Wednesday, March 10
Show: 8 pm
Particle Kid is the experimental future-folk project of Micah Nelson, a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist whose work refuses to stay inside any one genre. Across six albums, including the sprawling 26-song Time Capsule featuring Jim James, Sean Ono Lennon, J Mascis, Margo Price, and his father Willie Nelson, he blends analog warmth, tape loops, and psychedelic folk into something entirely his own. Rolling Stone named him one of its “New Classics.” He has toured the world as a headliner, backed Neil Young, opened for The Flaming Lips, Tinariwen, Meat Puppets, and The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and played Luck Reunion, BottleRock, and the Outlaw Music Festival.

One of the world’s music influential music makers, Daniel Lanois emerged onto the global scene in the 1980s, collaborating with Brian Eno on a series of experimental and groundbreaking ambient albums, culminating in 1983’s Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. His work in the early 80s ushered in new vistas of sonic possibility, leveraging the studio-as-instrument and employing pioneering production techniques to create immersive worlds of sound. From here, Lanois entered into a remarkable series of collaborations, producing timeless albums and commercial high-points with U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, the Neville Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, and Neil Young. In addition to his production work, Lanois has created 14 studio albums, including his most recent, Belladonna Nocturne, a thematic sequel to his acclaimed 2005 album, Belladonna.

Together, Nelson and Lanois are kindred sonic explorers. They have shared stages from the Hollywood Bowl to Luck Reunion and the Outlaw Music Festival. In October 2026 they released Blue Eye, an EP born from a rehearsal at Lanois’ Los Angeles studio with Big Thief’s Buck Meek, Kisser’s Germaine Dunes, and bassist Aroyn Day. It is a first glimpse of The Ocean Floor, their full-length collaboration due on Loosegroove Records in 2027.
