Fernando Viciconte has a rich history in the celebrated Portland music scene. For three decades he has churned out musical missives full of straightforward confessionals, mystical pop reveries and beaten-down drunken laments that have been cherished by the many music fans of the Great Northwest and beyond. He has returned with The Lucky House, recorded by his longtime collaborator, acclaimed producer and songwriter Luther Russell. This time, the writing is somehow bleaker and more shot-through with sorrow than ever before. Armed with his nylon-stringed guitar and reunited with his old compadre in an undisclosed Portland basement studio, Viciconte has crafted a stunning slice of heartland rock that alternates between the Suicide-inflected desolation of 80’s-era Springsteen, the dusty 60’s Tex-Mex garage-rock of Doug Sahm and the lonesome wail of Sun-era Elvis. The rare magnificence of Fernando’s unique set of pipes is on full display here, seared to analog tape through a tube desk specially designed by Russell and on its maiden run for Viciconte’s eleventh studio album.
